Quail Hunting Guidelines & Tips
Hunting Safety
Quail hunting is mostly done with a partner so it is very important to be visible to other hunters at all times. On these hunts your apparel should at least include a bright orange vest. Since you will have close proximity to your fellow hunters and the quail flight patterns can be unpredictable, the increased visibility is critical to prevent any unexpected harm or injury.
Another safety measure to consider is the range and aim of your gunfire in relation to the dogs. Once the dogs have located a covey Of quail, knowing your position and where you are firing is very important. When the flush happens you do not want to be firing into cross areas. You want to have a center position and shoot only from the center to your side and never drop below a horizontal position on low flying quail. As a pointer, if you are not using dogs then you will want to walk draws, ditches, fence lines and brushy field corners.
Weapon Choice
Picking the ideal weapon can greatly assist in making your quail hunt a successful one. Even though you can use just about any variety of gun from a 410 to a 12 gauge, you want to make sure you have the proper barrel length and choke. Quail, being so quick and having varying flight patterns, give you only seconds to respond to the flush. The choke affects the shot spread. When the shot leaves the muzzle it starts to spread out, and the choke determines a smaller spread or a wider spread. An open choke is best used for close shooting, and a tighter choke should be used for longer range shooting.
